Alumni Spotlight: Renee Horton

Dr. K. Renee Horton ('02 Electrical Engineering) is one of our Black History Month alumni spotlights, as her incredible accomplishments and drive exemplify how, with an LSU education, anything is possible. She graduated from LSU in 2002 with a BS in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Math, and in 2011 graduated from the University of Alabama with a PhD in Material Science with a concentration in Physics, becoming the first African American to graduate from the University in this area. Dr. Horton currently serves as the Space Launch System (SLS) Quality Engineer in the NASA Residential Management Office at Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans.

Ofori Agboka ('98 Psychology) is one of our Black History Month alumni spotlights, as his incredible accomplishments and drive exemplify how, with an LSU education, anything is possible. He began his career at General Motors and spent just over 20 years working his way up the corporate ladder in the very company he started at when he graduated from LSU. About a year ago, he took a chance and moved across to country to join Amazon as the Vice President Human Resources, Global Customer Fulfillment.

Kimberly McGlonn (2001 BACH H&SS, 2002 MAST HS&E, 2007 PHD HS&E) grew up on Grant Boulevard on the north side of Milwaukee, Wis., on a block that was a unique island in the city back then – it was the only block where there were Black and white people living as neighbors in an otherwise highly segregated city.

Bart Schmolke, an independent financial advisor with Financial Solutions Group in Alexandria, La., joined the board in2017 as an at-large member. A thirty-seven year professional in the financial industry, Bart started his career in 1983 with A.G. Edwards & Sons, and from 1988 to 2008, he served on the President’s Council with A.G. Edwards.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for blood has increased and the need will become even more urgent during the holidays. The SEC is a force not only on the football field, but a force for giving back. Let’s join together for a blood drive challenge during SEC Football Championship week, December 13-19, 2020. The school with the most alumni and fans to donate blood will be awarded a trophy and bragging rights for the year.
