LSU Alumni Eateries Shine on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives
Baton Rouge has always been a city that celebrates great food, and when Guy Fieri and his crew rolled into town to feature some of our favorite spots on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in April, we knew they were in for a treat. Even better? These restaurants aren’t just local gems—they’re owned and operated by proud LSU alumni. Let’s take a closer look at these Tiger-owned hotspots that made the cut.
Phil’s Oyster Bar & Seafood – A Baton Rouge Icon
Phil’s Oyster Bar & Seafood is more than just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Baton Rouge history. The roots of Phil’s run deep, dating back to 1945 when Phil Tuminello and his family opened a seafood market. What started as a simple business evolved into one of the city’s most beloved eateries.

In the 1970s, Gus Piazza (1975 BACH HS&E) took over and transformed Phil's into a full-service neighborhood restaurant, and today, his son, Anthony Piazza, who also attended LSU, carries on the family tradition. With acclaimed Chef Peter Sclafani (1990 BACH BUS) also part of the team as executive chef and co-owner, Phil’s has only elevated its status. It’s no wonder Guy Fieri and his crew spent days here—slinging oysters, feasting on local favorites, and soaking in 75 years of history. Whether you're craving fresh seafood, a laid-back atmosphere, or a taste of tradition, Phil’s is a must-visit.
Iverstine Butcher – The Ultimate Farm-to-Table Experience
If you love fresh, locally sourced meats, then Iverstine Butcher is your spot. Founded in 2016 by LSU alum Galen Iverstine (2009 BACH H&SS), this whole-animal butcher shop is dedicated to bringing the highest quality, ethically raised meats to Baton Rouge. What started as a family farm in Kentwood has expanded into a full-service butcher shop and smokehouse that still holds true to its farm-to-table roots.

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives stopped by to get a firsthand look at what makes Iverstine Butcher special, and they weren’t disappointed. From grass-fed beef to pastured pork and poultry, every cut is raised without antibiotics or hormones, ensuring the best flavors and quality. It’s the only whole-animal butcher shop in town, making it a true standout in the local food scene.
Dempsey’s – Comfort Food at Its Finest
When it comes to authentic Louisiana cooking, Dempsey’s is the real deal. Founded and owned by George W. Gugich, who attended LSU, this unassuming eatery may not have flashy signs or over-the-top decor, but what it lacks in frills makes up for in serious flavor. Known for its scratch-made dishes and homestyle charm, Dempsey’s has become a staple for locals looking for hearty, soulful meals. Tonya Gugich, George’s wife, now runs the restaurant, continuing the legacy of their family’s commitment to quality and community.
Guy Fieri and his crew were quick to recognize the magic of Dempsey’s, joining the long list of diners who can’t get enough of their down-home comfort food. Whether it’s their perfectly seasoned gumbo, rich etouffée, or crispy fried seafood, every bite tells a story of tradition and passion. Once you’ve eaten here, you’ll understand why it’s a Baton Rouge favorite.
Baton Rouge Mid-City favorite Elsie's Plate & Pie will be featured this Friday, May 2 at 8pm CST and Cou-Yon’s Cajun Bar-B-Q in Port Allen is also set to be featured on Friday, May 9 at 8pm CST. Cou-Yon's owners (and brothers) Paul and Michael Mladenka also attended LSU.
A Taste of LSU Tiger Pride
What do these restaurants have in common? Besides serving up incredible food, they all share a connection to LSU and a commitment to keeping local culinary traditions alive. Each brings something unique to the table, and thanks to Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, the rest of the country now knows what Baton Rouge locals have loved for years.
So next time you're looking for a great meal in Baton Rouge, support these LSU alumni businesses. Whether you're in the mood for fresh oysters, top-tier butcher cuts, classic Louisiana comfort food, or Bar-B-Q, these spots have you covered. And who knows? You might even find yourself sitting in the same booth where Guy Fieri once dug into a plate of Baton Rouge’s finest!
