Karen G. Brack, 2026 LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction Honoree

Karen Brack earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University in 1984, launching a career that would span decades at the forefront of aerospace engineering.

From her early days in Baton Rouge to her influential role in global aviation, Brack’s journey reflects a lifelong commitment to innovation, excellence, and giving back to the LSU Tiger community.

A Foundation Built at LSU

Karen Brack earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University in 1984, launching a career that would span decades at the forefront of aerospace engineering. She later earned her master’s degree in electrical engineering from University of California, Irvine, further strengthening her technical expertise.

Her LSU education laid the groundwork for a career defined by precision, innovation, and leadership in highly complex systems.

Leading Innovation in Aerospace Engineering

Today, Brack serves as a Technical Fellow in Airborne Electronic Hardware Engineering at The Boeing Company in Everett, Washington, where she plays a critical role in shaping the future of aviation safety and technology.

With more than 35 years of experience, Brack has led advancements in:

  • Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC)
  • Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA)
  • Hardware design and verification across commercial, military, and space avionics systems

During her tenure at Boeing, she has also:

  • Served as a delegate to the Federal Aviation Administration, helping ensure compliance with both FAA and European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards
  • Represented Boeing on international FAA/EASA/Industry policy committees
  • Played a leadership role as co-chair of the global DO-254 standards committee, helping define certification standards for airborne electronic hardware worldwide

Her work has directly contributed to safer, more reliable aircraft systems used across the globe.

Engineering Impact & Industry Contributions

Brack’s technical impact is both deep and far-reaching. She holds two patents tied to advanced aircraft systems, including innovations in flight control system architecture for the Boeing 787, and redundancy management and fault mitigation in avionics hardware.

She developed a groundbreaking objective-based process for ASIC obsolescence redesign, a methodology she applied successfully for more than 25 years—ensuring long-term reliability and adaptability in rapidly evolving aerospace technologies.

Before joining Boeing, Brack built her expertise with industry leaders including Honeywell International and TRW Avionics Systems Division, where she held roles ranging from digital design engineer to systems engineer.

A Lifelong Commitment to LSU

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Karen Brack’s dedication to LSU is both personal and impactful.

Her contributions include: Establishing the William and Karen Brack ECE Graduate Student Scholarship, Funding the Karen and Bill Brack Teleconference Room at the Cook Hotel & Conference Center at LSU, and Supporting the William and Karen Brack ECE Professorship Startup Fund.

She has also been deeply engaged in leadership and volunteerism, including:

  • Serving on the LSU Alumni Association Board of Directors
  • Active membership on the LSU Electrical and Computer Engineering Industry Advisory Board
  • Serving on the LSU College of Engineering Dean’s Council

Her commitment to LSU has been recognized with numerous honors, including:

  • Induction into the LSU College of Engineering Hall of Distinction (2016)
  • The LSU Alumni Association President’s Medal (2011)
  • LSU Alumni Association Chapter Leadership Awards (1993, 1998)

Strengthening LSU Tiger Network Nationwide

Karen Brack has been a champion for LSU alumni engagement across the country. She played a key role in building and supporting alumni chapters in Phoenix, San Diego, and Seattle.

Her hands-on involvement included serving as treasurer and volunteer coordinator for chapter events like crawfish boils—helping bring Tigers together and strengthen connections coast to coast.

Karen enjoys Louisiana cooking, hiking, travel, and being an avid college sports fan for LSU and her husband, Bill’s, alma mater.
