Leadership in Sports Medicine

A leader in orthopedic care, Bankston chaired the Baton Rouge Orthopaedic Clinic Board from 1998–2005 and was honored as the SEC Physician of the Year in 2016. His expertise is recognized nationwide, and his guidance is often sought by the next generation of sports medicine professionals.

An LSU Journey from Student to Legend

Bankston’s love for LSU began early. A University Laboratory School graduate, he went on to earn a bachelor’s in microbiology from LSU in 1982, where he also served as president of Sigma Chi fraternity. He completed his medical degree at LSU Medical School in Shreveport, followed by a residency at the University of South Alabama and a fellowship at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery in Indiana.

He’s been recognized with the Significant Sig Award, the Louisiana Orthopaedic Award, and induction into the University High School Hall of Distinction.

Dr. Bankston’s own words capture the heart of his story:

“LSU has always meant home and family… My work with LSU athletes for the last 30 years has been the greatest honor and has given me the greatest fulfillment of my professional life. I will always cherish the purple and gold.”

As we honor Dr. Bankston as a 2025 LSU Hall of Distinction inductee on Friday, April 11, we celebrate not only his excellence in sports medicine — but his enduring devotion to the LSU community.
