At Baton Rouge High School, Fife distinguished himself as a multisport athlete, competing in both football and basketball, while also working as a paperboy—an early sign of the work ethic that would define his career. It was also during this time that he met his future wife, Rose Marie, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in family and community.
Fife attended Louisiana State University from 1972 to 1976, earning a degree in Construction Technology. His LSU education laid the groundwork for a career that would span decades and influence industries across Louisiana and beyond.
After graduation, Fife joined Universal Corporation, where he was mentored by industry pioneer Homer Knost. Rising through roles in preconstruction, project management, and project controls, Fife eventually became vice president of Arkel International, overseeing projects worldwide and developing a reputation as a strategic and people-first leader.
In 1988, driven by a desire to spend more time with family and pursue entrepreneurship, Fife invested in Southern Equipment Rental Services, leading a period of significant growth.
He returned to Arkel International in 1992 as president and CEO, helping expand the company’s presence in Louisiana’s competitive construction market. During this era, Fife demonstrated a hallmark leadership trait—his ability to attract and empower exceptional teams without micromanagement.
Fife’s entrepreneurial spirit continued with the founding of Arkel Constructors, a commercial general contracting firm that has become a cornerstone of the Gulf Coast construction industry. He also co-founded Pipeline Technology in 1994, supporting critical chemical infrastructure in the Plaquemine and Geismar regions, and expanded into residential development through strategic partnerships.
Through Arkel Constructors, Fife has played a key role in shaping the physical landscape of LSU. His company has delivered some of the university’s most recognizable and impactful projects, including:
These projects not only improved LSU’s campus but also enhanced the student-athlete and student experience for generations of Tigers.
Following a strategic separation of business entities in 2012, Arkel Constructors continued its upward trajectory. Since 2014, the company has consistently ranked among the top contractors in Baton Rouge and has been recognized among the LSU Top 100 and Baton Rouge Business Report’s Top 100 private companies.
In 2017, Fife began transitioning day-to-day leadership of Arkel Constructors to his son, Derek, ensuring the company’s legacy continues. Today, he remains actively involved in strategic planning and long-term vision, while also serving as managing partner of Pipeline Technology and a partner in Derashnie, a Baton Rouge logistics company.
Beyond business success, Fife has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service. His leadership roles include:
A devoted LSU supporter, Fife has been a member of Tigers Unlimited/Tiger Athletic Foundation for more than 35 years and continues to give back to both LSU Athletics and the LSU Foundation.
In recognition of his contributions, he received the LSU Foundation President’s Award in 2025, along with the Catholic High School Perpetual Founder Award.
Whether it’s a game in Tiger Stadium or a campus event, the Fife family’s presence is a testament to their enduring Tiger pride. Their support for LSU is unwavering—grounded in gratitude for the institution that helped shape their journey.
His legacy is one of vision, integrity, and impact—building not only companies, but opportunities for others to thrive.
“LSU is not just a school in Baton Rouge. LSU is Baton Rouge! I tell everyone, LSU is one of the key ingredients that make Baton Rouge a success. LSU is also where me, my wife and children and their spouses graduated. I can brag that my daughter was a Tiger Girl, my daughter-in-law was a cheerleader, and my son-in-law played on the 2000 College World Series championship team at LSU. LSU has been vital in all of my children’s lives as they have all received degrees from LSU and have been very successful in their careers after graduation because of the foundation and the network LSU gave them.”
For his extraordinary leadership, business achievements, and dedication to LSU and the Baton Rouge community, Johnny Fife will be honored at the 2026 LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction presented by FMOL Health on Friday, April 17, 2026—one of the highest honors bestowed by the LSU Alumni Association.
