LSU Alumnus Justice John Michael Guidry Joins the Louisiana Supreme Court

Justice John Michael Guidry (1983 BACH HSS), one of the state's most seasoned jurists, has achieved a historic milestone, officially sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court on January 1, 2025. His appointment marks a significant moment in Louisiana’s judicial history, as he becomes the fourth African American to serve on the state’s highest court in its 211-year history.

From LSU to the Louisiana Supreme Court

Justice Guidry is a South Baton Rouge native who graduated from McKinley High School before going to LSU, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1983. He then pursued his juris doctorate at Southern University Law Center, where he graduated cum laude in 1987. His legal and political career has been defined by leadership, integrity, and groundbreaking achievements.

Justice Guidry began his public service career in 1991 when he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. By 1993, he advanced to the Louisiana State Senate, where he continued to shape state policies and advocate for justice.

His judicial career took a major step forward in 1997 when he was elected to the First Circuit Court of Appeal. In 2023, he made history as the first African American Chief Judge of the First Circuit Court of Appeal in its 145-year history. His judicial leadership and deep commitment to justice led to his election as Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court in 2025.

Commitment to Legal Excellence and Education

Beyond his judicial work, Justice Guidry is actively involved in legal organizations such as the Louisiana Conference of Court of Appeal Judges, the Louisiana Judicial Council, and the American Judges Association.

He also contributes to key legal initiatives, including the Louisiana Supreme Court Technology Commission and the Baton Rouge Bar Association Pro Bono Committee, demonstrating his dedication to advancing legal technology, pro bono service, and judicial reform.

Justice Guidry is also a passionate legal educator, serving as an adjunct professor at Southern University Law Center since 1988. His mentorship and influence continue to shape future generations of legal professionals.
